The Power of Distraction

I believe it was John Lennon who said “Life is what happens while you are making other plans.

Well sometimes you can get so distracted by those other plans that you forget about more than just living your life, you forget what’s really important in life.

This past week is a perfect example.

I have had so much going on with work and my play and (yes I will admit it) I got sick.  It was actually the sickness that tipped me off that something was wrong (as it should – illness is your body’s way of telling you you are doing something wrong) because I know I only get sick when I am really stressed and that is rare.

Even last night I found I was inexplicably angry and upset (very unlike my usual happy self) and I could physically feel the tension constricting my chest.  If you knew me you’d know this is exceptionally rare.  The thing is I’ve has so much going on that I’ve been forgetting what’s really important.  I have had so much distracting me from life and happiness that I lost sight of these things entirely and got myself all into a knot.

There are some really great distractions out there, family, friends, bills, taxes, even things we like doing that just start to take up so much of our time and energy that they become burdens and start distracting us from the fun we used to have doing them.

Luckily there is a good side to distraction.   I have mentioned before the benefits of distracting yourself from some of the nasty things going on in life by doing something fun that you really enjoy for a while until you are in a better state of mind to handle those nasty things.

I think I am going to start practicing a little of that kind of distraction today.  Everything will be what it will be (Que Sera, Sera) and it can survive without me.

I am taking a nice long mental vacation, with all of the hours I’ve been putting in I deserve it.

So until the next time, I am definitely going to remember to …

Keep laughting.
