On Purpose

Today was an amazing day.  Today I helped someone discover their life purpose.

Wow!  What an amazing feeling.

Purpose is really at the core of all of us.  That thing that we are meant to do or be, and when you find it, you know.

I can’t remember if I’ve done a post before on the fact that purpose should never be forgettable, so I’ll say it again now.

If you think you know your purpose, here is the test: can you state it clearly and simply right now without thinking.

Most people think that since this is such a HUGE thing it has to be complex and have many parts to it.  For the most part I would say, that is way off from the truth.

(Now some people may be quite different than me – so I’ll allow for that here)

I believe that for most, if not all, people, their purpose will be simple and concise.  I’ve shared mine before (to make the world a happier place), and the one I helped with today was equally as simple.

Chances are, yours is just as simple.

The problem is people think that “simple” is the same as “boring” or “ordinary”, but this is NOT TRUE!

Just because it’s simple does not mean it is not important.

The wheel is actually pretty simple, but it’s hugely important to our society.  In fact I would argue that most of the really important things humanity has discovered have been quite simple at their core.

Purpose is one of them.

And knowing your purpose is HUGE for feeling in control of you life and living a fulfilling life.

In his book “The Power of Story”, Jim Loehr talks about purpose and how it affects those he works with.  He talks to CEOs and executives who think they know their purpose: “to work hard, make money, and provide for my family”, but then they discover (when put to the test) that their life is a sham.

Why?

Because the family that they are working so hard to provide for (which has a six bedroom, five bathroom house with a pool) never gets to see or spend any time with that parent.

No one’s purpose is to make money!

When you live a false purpose, you can lose yourself and who you really are in what society (parents, media, etc) SAY is important, and find yourself, divorced, overweight, and miserable with all your money.

Now I’m not saying you can’t make money, in fact I intend to make lots of it, but I’ll do so in service to my purpose, which is going to be a whole lot more fun and fulfilling.

So if you are interested in looking deeper into your purpose, give me a call.  I can’t guarantee we’ll find it quickly, but if you are dedicated, we’ll nail it down eventually, and your life will be better for it.

So until the next time, keep laughing and living your purpose.
